When archives librarian, Nicole Sheffield, inherits an oceanfront property from her Aunt Nina, she's unaware that something has been hidden for her in the house--and that more than one party is eager to get inside.  As Nicole begins piecing together clues left by her aunt, she forms an unlikely alliance with an enigmatic man named Michael, who carries a secret of his own.

Capturing the beauty and chill of Cape Cod in autumn, Winters' seventh novel takes readers to a picturesque town on the coast of Massachusetts--then uncovers the secrets behind neighborly faces and the possibility of a love behind lies.  Few things are what they seem, as this richly atmospheric mystery unfolds.

"[Winters' writing] is a brilliant blurring of the lines between high art and pop culture." -New Jersey Life Magazine

"Jill Winters' skill with a sex scene is as sharp as her plotting." -RT Book Reviews on Blushing Pink

"an author for all seasons." -Midwest Book Review

Kingdom is another great read from Jill Winters. I agree with the other reviews that this book is a bit of a departure from Winters' usual style. It is definitely more serious and intense. I loved the mood she set in the beginning--it felt dark and suspicious. If you are a fan of her more humorous style though, don't worry, Winters has still sprinkled some funny lines throughout.

The story begins with Nicole, who has just inherited the house and works of her deceased aunt, a successful artist. She moves into the house with the purpose of inventorying the contents and eventually selling it. It becomes clear early on that there is something intriguing about the house; something that has many people in the town willing to do anything to get inside. While it is true that this book is different stylistically from Winters' other works, one thing that is consistent is that it kept me guessing throughout. Several characters were so suspicious to me, but I couldn't put my finger on what their angle was. I enjoyed following along while Nicole tried to unravel the clues her aunt left behind for her to find `the treasure.' Overall, great read..definitely recommend!

The main story is decent, a standard romance. However there is too much extra without any need or resolution. Why do we need to know about Ginger's personal life? The storyline of Vickey, Todd and Donavan was completely extraneous - it is just an excuse to write more sex into the story with nothing contributed to the main storyline.
The ending for me was lackluster and predictable.
When you inherit your aunts house you don't expect to be mugged, rescued, fall in love, find a body and a treasure map. A gripping story that holds your attention until the end.
I enjoyed the story pretty well, up to the end. I cannot believe an editor allowed this to be published it is missing the end of an entire story line! A secondary character's husband alludes to the "plans" he has for her and we never find out what they are. Once the story starts to reach its climax the author drops those characters completely. What a shame. It seems the standards for some books aren't quite what one would hope for or expect. I will not trust this author in the future.
Love the storyline, the author's sense of humor and feel for human nature. I would love to read more of her books, but Ms. Winters may want to get a new editor. Extra words, starting a sentence and changing the wording midstream and other grammatical errors makes the reader stop to figure out what is being said numerous times throughout the story. As an educator, I could use this book to have students correct grammar and writing within an interesting story. Good story. Poor writing mechanics.
Heroine Nicole receives an inheritance of a house by the sea, "her kingdom." As soon as Nicole moves into the house, she is plunged into mystery, danger and romance involving the "bad boy" your mother never wants you to speak to, let alone hook up with. Jill Winters writes a wonderful story with great characters involved in crazy and sometimes hysterically funny situations. You will thoroughly enjoy this mystery and contemporary romance from the first page to the last.
Summer is great for books like this! Set in Chatham, Cape Cod- it's one if my favorite places. The plot is suspenseful enough to keep your interest, but it's not a thrill-seeking page turner- which I have no patience for in June-September. Lots of inconsistencies are meant to be thrown in as red herrings, but just end up being obvious distractions. I'm not a huge fan of mysteries anyway , but this was fun- not too predictable - with some funny revelations! ( Spoiler alert- the stodgy old lady who runs the Preservation Society is gay, what a hoot!) As long as you don't read these types of books with a literary critic's eye, you can't be disappointed. It's not classic literature and It's not Harlequin romance fiction trash. It's an enjoyable romantic mystery summertime book!
This is an enjoyable weekeend/vacation read. I wish the main character was a little less gullible, although that is how she is supposed to be. It would have been nice to have the family relationships explored, but this is not that type of book. It is not a scintillating mystery, I would bill it as more of a romance novel with a little bit of mystery thrown in. It is a nice bit of escapism fluff. )
